I'm really beginning to get around to many of our schools. I'm so impressed at each school with some of the things that people do to make their school unique. For instance, I just read a book from one of our middle schools and the inside of the book had a "Guys Read Approved" sticker. I didn't even know you could get those stickers. The best thing about these stickers is that they are free and can be printed from here: http://guysread.com/more/. This page has bookmarks and spine labels too that you can use.
Another school lets parents donate money for the purchase of a birthday book. I know many of you do this, and while I was standing there, three students brought money into the media center. She indicated that this revenue source generates up to $1500.00 a year. It's not a big school, either.
At an elementary school I saw a carpet sample with an oversized question mark on it. Students who had questions stood on the carpet. This avoided the pied piper syndrome!
